"Ranges through Europe and across Asia. Found also in north-western Africa and North America. Characteristics tufts on the head are only raised when the owl is alert. Facial area is an orangish-yellow, with a white central area extending between the orange eyes and around the bill. Underparts are pale yellow with blank streaking . Hens have more rusty-buff faces, otherwise sexes are alike."
